SUMMER SCHEDULE
Dear friends in Christ,
Included on the calendar of this issue of our famous parish newsletter (tah, ta-da-rratta-ta-taah!) and also published on a previous mailout that you should have received (let us know if you didn't) is the revised weekday worship schedule. The Daily Office offering is unaltered (though I'd remind you that when weather permits we pray Evening Prayer at the ballfield between softball games on Sunday afternoon instead of in the Chapel at 5:15 pm). But our times for celebrations of the Holy Eucharist will be changed as of June 1.
Because I will soon be the only priest serving the parish, we will not be offering the Eucharist on Monday, which is normally my day off. However, the Tuesday Mass will be at noon, so those who have been attending on Monday can easily adjust their schedules. This will be our Healing Mass at which we will offer Unction and special intercessions. Our Wednesday celebration will be in the evening. We all know that Wednesday is more likely to be free from secular activities because of allowance for "Mid-Week Services" than any other time, so I would like for us to capitalize on that greater availability. Usually Mass will be at 7:00 pm. However, we will maintain our Evensong schedule on the first Wednesday or each month. On those days, Mass will be at 6:30 pm and Evensong at 7:00. This way, even if someone forgets details of the schedule, if he or she shows up to worship at 7:00 pm on any Wednesday evening, we will have a worship offering. The schedule for Thursday, Friday and Saturday will remain as it has been.
I am thankful for the devotion of so many that makes keeping a rather extensive worship schedule a necessary part of our parish life. I also hope that all of this attention to schedule will cause others to consider increasing their own life of prayer through involvement in worship during the week in addition to their Sunday celebration.
Life in our parish is going to be very busy this summer. Two of our Catechists of the Good Shepherd will be away for further intensive training several weekends. The building committee will remain hard at work on design and construction strategy. On August 21, we will be commencing our second capital campaign, and a lot of planning for that essential work will be necessary. In response to all of this and with the hope that many will be able to enjoy some vacation time and rest, it has been decided that our Sunday Christian Education program is going to recess until after Labor Day. I am also encouraging other program leaders to lighten their tasks for a season. So many of us have fallen into habits of overextending, and we need to have energy and strength to accomplish that which God will lead us to do.
As our Sunday afternoon softball games become regular again, I hope even more will come out for food and fellowship. Some good ideas about moving the children's playground closer to the field and offering other activities are being considered for those who are unable or do not wish to grab a mitt and bat. I will try to determine what time we should be firing up the grill for burgers, brats or dogs, so that some may enjoy coming out for a picnic meal together even if they can't be with us for the afternoon. It is so good for us to have relaxed time together.
I will close with an apology for being more informative than inspiring in this edition of The Lion's Tale. Remember that you are always in my prayer and that I thank God for his Presence with and in us, building us up in the love of Christ as we continue to serve in his Name.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Timothy P. Perkins , SSC
