Soup Kitchen:
St. Mark’s expanded its feeding ministry on September 4,
2008, when,
under the tireless direction of Peggy Porter, our soup kitchen officially began serving the
homeless and the working poor of south central
Arlington. Peggy was assisted by Shelley Strock, who became director in its second year, assisted by Laurie Adams. Under the current co-leadership of Laurie
Adams, director, and Chris Phenix, assistant director,
teams of dedicated and enthusiastic St. Mark’s
parishioners and friends take turns serving up a hot,
nutritious lunch each Thursday from 11:30 to 12:30 in
the parish hall. According to “Maddie,” who saw our
flier at a local John Peter Smith clinic, “It’s
wonderful that you’re doing this for our neighborhood. I
didn’t expect the soup to be homemade!” Currently, the Soup Kitchen serves an average of 45 guests each week, with a recent “high” of 67 guests.
The Soup Kitchen at St. Mark’s Church is staffed by
volunteers and funded entirely by tax-deductible
donations. Contributions to this ministry make excellent
Christmas gifts for teachers and those on your shopping
list who “have everything,” as well as memorials in lieu
of funeral flowers. Just write “Soup Kitchen” on the memo line of your check and include a note telling us the occasion and the name and address of the
person(s) to be notified. We’ll send out an
acknowledgment and a copy to you for tax reporting
purposes.
Each week the soup kitchen staff prays that we will see
Christ in those we serve, and that they will see Him in
us. Our prayers are answered every Thursday as we share
His love with our neighbors and each other.
Meals on Wheels:
St. Mark's serves as a Meal Distribution Site for
Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County.
