“Proclaim the Truth with Boldness”
by Fr. Timothy Perkins, SSC

The heading of this little essay is taken directly from the Collect of the Day in which we pray that by grace we may be enabled to bear witness to the faith we hold.  As I have reflected on the phrase, I find that I am thankful that we acknowledge that we depend on grace to do this.  We need God’s empowering grace, the Spirit’s inspiration, in order to comprehend and speak the truth revealed in Christ Jesus.  We need grace to be bold in our faithfulness.

But this realization does not excuse us from responsibility.  We cannot learn the truth of the Gospel if we remain unfamiliar with teaching of the Church.  Attentiveness to the lessons of Scripture in our worship is an important means for us to learn, as is regular private reading of the Bible.  But all of us also need to take opportunity to reflect with others on the matters of faith.  One way we have typically provided this opportunity is through our regular Sunday and weekday offerings of Christian Education.  While we are slowing down for the summer, I hope everyone will reflect on the great benefit of studying and learning together and take advantage of these offerings when they are scheduled.

Next Sunday, I am asking that all parents with children who will be involved in Sunday School next year meet briefly with me between services, beginning at 9:15 a.m.  Other plans will be developing in the months ahead.  At St. Mark’s we attempt to provide education in the faith for everyone.  What better way can we prepare ourselves to respond to God’s grace and proclaim his Truth boldly?
