“Confident Faith”
by Fr. Timothy Perkins, SSC
“Trust in the LORD with all
thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy
paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
These verses of Holy Scripture,
familiar to me from my youth, have been on my mind and
in my heart as I pray for this parish of late. We have
been going through difficult years in the history of
Anglicanism and in the life our diocese and these
difficulties have been a burden to all of us who seek to
serve the Lord in this place. In our confusion, we have
worried over trying to understand what remains
incomprehensible to us. Not knowing precisely what lies
ahead, we have not known which we way we ought to go.
But now we are in a gracious moment
of rejoicing over the wonderful success of the capital
campaign in which we have been engaged. A generous
outpouring of sacrifice and commitment to St. Mark’s has
been offered; and once again, through this generosity of
spirit and the devoted faithfulness of many, God has
provided according to our needs. “Let us rejoice and be
glad.” Psalm 118:24
This rejoicing provides a wonderful
opportunity to encourage one another in faith. Our
commitment expresses the sort of trust in the Lord that
is the foundation for our fellowship with one another in
Christ, and this can be our confidence in facing
difficulties that may lie ahead. The immediate future
that has threatened us with anxiety and dread is no more
uncertain than the future has always been. And our past
has taught us and our Christian faith affirms that the
God we seek and serve is absolutely trustworthy. St.
Paul reminds us, “God is faithful, by whom you were
called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our
Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:9
I believe that if we wholeheartedly trust
in the Lord together, we will have the confidence to
grow in faith and love. In this confidence, I trust
that God himself will guide throughout the days ahead,
leading us “along right pathways for his Name’s sake.”
Psalm 23:3 (BCP)
