“Come, Holy Spirit, Come”
by Fr. Timothy Perkins, SSC
Our prayers throughout this past
week have been centered in the Glorious Mystery of
Christ’s Ascension into heaven from whence he had come
in great humility for our redemption. In the Gospels at
our weekday Masses, Jesus spoke of the wonder that we
benefit through his departure from the earth. Only then,
could the Holy Spirit be sent to enliven and enlighten
the Church, to fill and inspire the believing soul, and
to guide the faithful into all revealed truth.
Today we begin the great week of
expectancy that leads us to the Feast of Pentecost, that
great and holy occasion in which the promise of Christ
that the Spirit, the Comforter, would be sent to us is
fulfilled. By our baptism, we have received the Holy
Spirit. In the Sacraments, grace comes to us, guaranteed
by the abiding Spirit of God. Through Scripture and
Christian teaching and preaching, our minds are
enlightened by the Holy Spirit to receive, believe, and
in some sense begin to comprehend the great mystery of
God’s love, revealed in Christ, sealed by the Holy
Spirit. The Spirit has come, is coming, and ever shall
come to the believing soul that seeks the Truth of God.
