“Stability in the Way”
by Fr. Timothy Perkins, SSC
We are at the
beginning of another capital campaign, and concerns have
been expressed about where St. Mark’s Church is
going. How can we be expected to support such a
demanding effort while experiencing uncertainty about
our future? The answer to these concerns, which are
primarily spiritual in nature, is found in the language
of the Collect of this Fifth Sunday of Easter. Borrowing
the familiar teaching of our Lord from St. John’s
Gospel, we pray “to know… Jesus Christ to be the way,
the truth, and the life.”
Knowing Jesus, we
follow him in the way along which he leads; we come to
understand the truth about what we can and should do in
loving response to him; and we live the life he has
given us as faithful servants of the Kingdom of
God. Faithfully following our Risen Lord, uncertainty
yields to the knowledge of everlasting life, instability
is replaced with the steadfastness of our faith, and we
learn to walk “in the way that leads to eternal
life.” The knowledge of this everlasting life is our
stability and strength in Jesus.
All the people of God known as “St.
Mark’s Church” are called to find the stability of
following Jesus in the way. In him, we are all
challenged to know the truth about how much we have been
given and what Christ would have us offer to support
this church in the capital campaign. Having been given
the great gift of life in him, we are all invited to
live and give sacrificially and lovingly to the honor of
Almighty God and the upbuilding of one another in faith.
