“Where He Leads”
by Fr. Timothy Perkins, SSC

I feel certain that most of us have heard this Fourth Sunday of Easter referred to as “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Some of us remember fondly when it was typical on this Sunday each year to have the children who were involved in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd sing at the principal Mass of the day. All of us know, as soon as we hear the words “Good Shepherd” that we are talking about our Risen Lord. Jesus Christ is the one who tends and feeds his flock, “we are his people and the sheep of his pasture” (Psalm 100). “The LORD is my shepherd” (Psalm 23).

But let us consider not only the nurture and care we receive from the Lord Jesus, but also that it is his role to lead and guide. A good shepherd sometimes precedes and calls the sheep to follow. At other times he drives them from behind, pushing them to go where they may feel disinclined to follow. Sometimes our way is smooth and easy to follow. At others it is difficult and possibly even frightening. But in all things, we who are Christ’s own are called to trust in him who leads and guides. As long as we are true to the direction Jesus provides, we will find that we are cared for abundantly, lying down in green pastures and walking along still waters. Trusting in the Lord, let us follow him in the confidence of faith.
