40 Days of Prayer for the Diocese - Week 5

Property concerns

Virginia parishes have won every trial in dispute thus far, applying a statute specific to the commonwealth of Virginia.

The largest parish of the Diocese of Western New York was released by the bishop to the Diocese of Argentina (Southern Cone).

“The ecclesial entity that presents itself as the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin is gearing up for what it is calling its 49th Annual Convention (October 24-26), to be held in the town of Hanford. Interestingly, the ecclesial entity that presents itself as the Anglican Diocese of San Joaquin will be holding what it considers its 49th annual convention on the same weekend, some 40 miles away, in the city of Fresno.”

Seeking the Truth

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority… He will glorify me…  All that the Father has is mine…and [the Spirit] will declare it to you.”  John 16:12-15

“If two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.  For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”  Matthew 18:19-20

…but,

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”  Matthew 7:21

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”  1 John 4:1

“We shouldn’t judge those with whom we disagree.”

“Judge not, that you be not judged.” Matthew 7:1

…but,

“For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.”  Matthew 7:2

Can we be sure?

“If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”  John 8:31-32

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever.  Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings.”  Hebrews 13:8-9

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”  Acts 2:42

1 Corinthians

6:1-8—“Do you not know that the saints will judge the world?”
“To have lawsuits at all with one another is defeat…”

6:9-11—[All manner of sinners] “will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
“And such were some of you.  But you were washed, you were
sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and
in the Spirit of our God.”

6:12-20—“… your bodies are members of Christ.”
            “Shun immorality…”
“You are not your own; you were bought with a price.  So glorify
            God in your body.”

7:1-16—“For the wife does not rule over her own body, but the husband
does; likewise, the husband does not rule over his own body but
            the wife does.”

BCP 1662--“[Holy Matrimony] was ordained for a remedy against sin.”

7:17-24—“Only let every one lead the life which the Lord has assigned to him,
and in which God has called him.”

7:25-40—“The unmarried man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how
to please the Lord… secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.”

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:

1.  How important is it for the Church to seek the truth?

2.  Isn’t truth relative?

3.  “What I do with my own body is my business only,” or is it?
